Retirement Transformed Book Club

It’s a new year and we are so proud to be starting off 2021 by launching our virtual book club!  We are both avid readers and have found that taking the time to read the right books and reflect is an important element in both our personal and retirement growth. We crave that feeling of closing a good book at its end and being left with new-found purpose and endless inspiration. We want to read books that we can’t wait to talk about with you and learn from our collective impressions.

We will be selecting books that we think will be either inspirational, motivational, thought provoking or that will create a mindset shift that we can read together and discuss how the book relates to our own retirement journeys. Together we will learn, share and be inspired to live a new type of retirement… what we call a Retirement Transformed.

How does it work? We will be posting the book at the beginning of each month (sometimes every other month) in our free Facebook group and give you time to purchase the book and start reading. We will be hosting lives in the group at specific milestones and end each book with a Zoom call that you can register for to join us in the conversation.  Some months, we will be inviting the book’s author to join us on the Zoom!

Our first pick? The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life by David Brooks. This #1 New York Times bestselling author explores what it takes to lead a meaningful life in a self-centered world. He explains the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments.

Pick up a copy of The Second Mountain from your local bookstore (our preference), or click here to purchase it online

Make sure to follow our Retirement Transformed Facebook Group so you can join in on the live conversations where we will discuss aspects of the book and pose questions as we go along.  Our schedule for this first book is as follows:

  • January 13th at 2pm EST we will be kicking things off with a book overview and initial thoughts and reflections.
  • January 27th at 2pm EST we will be reviewing Part I, The Two Mountains and Part II, Vocation.
  • February 10th at 2pm EST we will cover Part III, Marriage and Part IV, Philosophy and Faith.
  • Finally, our live Zoom discussion will be hosted on February 24th at 7pm EST covering Part 5, Community and our final takeaways.

Don’t forget to Register for our final discussion on Zoom, February 24th at 7pm EST to share in some thoughtful conversation after we’ve finished the book to reflect on how we can apply these principles to our lives.

So just as a recap, we will post the new book in our Facebook group approximately once a month, follow up with lives throughout the book in the Facebook group and then end each book with a discussion via Zoom that you can register for. You don’t need to be a member of our Facebook group to register for the final discussion, but we think you will find value from sharing in all we will be discussing and offering in our group!
